If you have not seen The Flash mid-season finale yet…

1) Go watch the mid-season finale! What kind of rock are you living under? GEEZ!

2) STOP READING! There are major spoilers contained here!

So… The Man in the Yellow Suit! Where to start?

Let’s begin with all the little stuff in the episode that was cool, then we’ll get to the BIG stuff. Robbie Amell (that would be brother of Arrow’s Stephen Amell) is bringing some heat to Central City… and I don’t mean with his good looks. His character, Ronnie Raymond – who was thought to be killed in the accident at S.T.A.R. Labs- made a first small appearance in the previous episode, at the end of the show… all fired up! For those in the know, Ronnie Raymond is Firestorm.

In the mid-season finale, Caitlin Snow (played by the beautiful Danielle Panabaker) is

out shopping for the holidays, when she is approached by a dark figure in a parking garage. The dark figure ignites his hands and head, and turns around to reveal himself to her. Caitlin immediately knows he’s Ronnie… though I must say, if I didn’t already know who it was – it would have taken me a second glance to figure out. He doesn’t seem to know that he is Ronnie, and she is heartbroken to find her fiance’ NOT dead, yet has no idea who he is. At the end of the episode, he swoops in to save Barry’s ass, tells them to stop bothering him and flies off in a really cool Firestorm fashion. They did that part really well, so I’m antsy to see how they pull off his costume later on.

Eddie gives Iris a key in a ring box… sad Barry. This is a jump from the comics where Iris is Barry’s wife, and not dating a Thawne – but let’s go with it for now. You know Barry gets all worked up for Iris; it’s a running theme in the show! Now that he sees how advanced Iris and Eddie’s relationship is getting, and Dad Allen says something like “Slugger, stop being a girl, and tell her you love her”… Barry confesses his love for Iris. I cringed a little.

In the very first episode of The Flash, I mentioned to Spoken JB that there appeared to be two different lightning colors flying around Barry’s mom…one red and one yellow. I mentioned that there could have been a speedster or older version of Barry there trying to stop the murder from ever happening. He just said I was looking too far into it. However, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) someone pointed out to Joe (Jesse L. Martin) that Barry mentioned red and yellow lightning around his mother, and that Flash and Reverse Flash emitted those colors… “It may not have been Flash, but there was definitely another speedster there” (para-phrase). 1 point Jay + WHAT A TWIST!

Little stuff out of the way; let’s get into the meat of the show…

Reverse-Flash.jpg

Barry finds out that Joe has known Reverse Flash was in town. He also finds out that Joe kept it from him because Iris’ life was threatened. Understanding, yet visibly upset, Barry sets out to find this mysterious character.

At their first meeting, Barry gets his butt kicked and quickly realizes his foe is bigger, better, faster and stronger. Not to mention he is always blurred. So, long-story-short, the S.T.A.R. team figures out that the “Reverse Flash” emits tachyons, and constructs a force field to “catch” him. Reverse Flash comes in and kills everyone except Eddie Thawne (a nod to the name perhaps?) and gets caught in the contraption made to capture him. They quickly find (in pure S.T.A.R. design fashion) that the force field isn’t holding up very well, and Mr. Blurry-Face snags Wells and commences a blurry ass-kicking on the “handicapped” doctor. Barry pushes him out of the building, and gets his butt kicked AGAIN. Then, Ronnie saves the day and flies away… Reverse Flash is gone, as well. Here comes the “Aha!” and nerdy stuff…

The “Aha!” moment: I mentioned my observation earlier about there being two sets of lightning in the first episode. On that same day, I also said something to the effect of “Hey JB… Reverse Flash is obviously the antagonist here… and that Dr. Wells guy is an obvious time traveler of sorts. I bet he’s Reverse Flash.” 2 points Jay… it doesn’t happen very often – let me have it. As we find in the last minute or two of the finale, Dr. Wells has a Flash ring, a Reverse Flash suit and a very menacing voice-inflection to go with it. AHA!

The nerdy facts and some speculation: This half of the Spoken Jays thinks the writers of The Flash are going with a Professor Zoom storyline. Maybe not the original Zoom… more than likely – a mix of iterations. Professor Zoom (aka Eobard Thawne – see the name nod now?) made his first appearance in 1963 as a criminal from the 25th century. In one storyline (while travelling through time trying to stop Barry from ever becoming Flash) he realizes without Barry becoming Flash – there would be no Zoom.

Here’s what I think: the writers are going to show us that Wells/ Reverse Flash is actually Eobard Thawne; not only time traveler and criminal mastermind, but relative to the unharmed Eddie Thawne. He wants the future to proceed as planned, so Barry can fulfill his role in the “Crisis” on the holo-newspaper. We’ll just have to wait and see where the story goes from here!
