A few things we learned from the Dawn of Justice trailer…

So, SDCC brought us a lot of new things to geek out over. Because there were so many grainy videos of exclusive trailers pirated and leaked on-line, most of the studios involved decided to release the trailers officially soon after. One of which was the Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer… here are few things we learned from that trailer release.

First and foremost, we learned that JB is still skeptical about the upcoming film. He didn’t like Man of Steel, and he still thinks Affleck was a poor choice. So there’s that…

  • The after effects of the Zod battle

We actually see a few things here, at the beginning of the trailer. The world wants to know who he really is, and what he stands for. Fair question considering the devastation brought on at the end of Man of Steel. That, and the fact that Kal-El (to the typical human onlooker) seemingly killed one of his own, in cold blood. We also see that Bruce Wayne was apparently in Metropolis on that day. Being the daytime version of the Dark Knight, he is seen running into the impending doom of a Wayne building falling and saving little girl… looking all Bat-mad at the rubble.

  • We get a glimpse of the Bat-cave

Wayne Manor looks like a bad version of the Greek ruins. We can only assume that Bruce has spent so much time being Batman, that his Wayne persona is more of an after-thought. This is kind of a confirmed idea… this Batman is older – we know that. And from Alfred’s little speech, we know that things have happened in his caped-crusader career that has turned his demeanor sour.

  • Batman is in Metropolis

Clark Kent is trying to mount a journalist attack on Batman calling him a “one man right of terror”. Perry White’s rebuttal to that is what apparently gets Sups going after Bats in the first place… “Nobody cares about Clark Kent taking on the Batman”. Let’s be honest… Clark wouldn’t be phased by Bats unless he left the burrows of Gotham to spread his “brand” (you’ll get that when you watch the trailer) of crime-fighting to the grand city of Metropolis.

  • Hope, not an “S”

Again, pulling from Man of Steel, Lois reminds Kal that he is a symbol of hope. Maybe he feels bad about leveling a few cities?

  • Lex Luthor still likes his wigs

When I was a kid, I thought it was a joke seeing Gene Hackman with his wigs for Lex. Then, Kevin Spacey’s Luthor had the same obsession. As it turns out, Jesse Eisenberg’s portrayal of the villain also likes them. Or, maybe he loses his hair while he’s fooling around with whatever he’s planning on doing with Zod’s body. Kryptonite manufacturing, anyone? Let’s look at the obvious, here… if Lex got his hands on Zod’s corpse – who’s to say he didn’t get his hands on any of the other Krypton-tech?

  • Joker’s mark is there

Bruce tells us 20 years later, there aren’t many good guys left… and not many stayed good. All that, while he beholds a Robin suit that has been spray-painted with “Hahah, Joke’s on you BATMAN”. We can only assume that Batman, Joker and Robin have already been through their sordid past, at this point. Let’s face it… he says he’s been in Gotham for 20 years! So, which Robin is this? How many Robins have there been so far?

***there’s a lot going on in the next 30 seconds of the trailer. Let’s just say – Trinity is shown in action***

  • God vs. Man

We see three distinct Bat-suits in the trailer… The typical suit; the dessert suit that Snyder teased on Instagram, that I now see in the trailer (first time I saw the trailer, it was from a phone camera – a lot was blurry); The armored suit. The armored suit is obviously modeled after the Frank Miller design from The Dark Knight Returns. If a man is to go up against a god, what else is he supposed to do? I wonder if this Batman will get his hands on some of that lovely green rock from Luthor?

  • The Boyscout

I do believe Snyder is trying to put a little of the traditional Superman in there for posterity. There’s a spot in the trailer where Ma Kent is telling Sups that “people hate what they don’t understand… be their hero”. Almost saying, ‘don’t mind them… just do right’. This is old school Superman to the core: He’s not a killer… in fact, he’s more of goody-two-shoes than Steve Rogers. That’s where the whole dark-world Metropolis thing doesn’t mesh with most fans. Maybe we’ll see more of that?

So, there you have it. We learned a lot from the SDCC trailer. And, I’m still really excited for this movie. I’m a huge Superman fan, and seeing someone that (I feel) has a strong enough presence to take up the reigns left by Christopher Reeve on the big screen, in a film that will bring together Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, makes me one happy camper. And, I’m slowly seeing why Snyder thinks Affleck is a good Bats.
