While JB and Producer Mo are away on a road trip, and recording is halted for the week, I decided to do a little writing so none of you feel like we forgot you. As always, there could be some spoilers, so be prepared to skip sections if you’re not caught up with your nerdy TV watchin’!
In Fact, let’s start with that… This week’s Gotham introduced us to something I have personally been chomping at the bit for – The Red Hood Gang. It was our original thought that Gotham’s showrunners would be slowly introducing us to a Joker storyline via the Red Hood. It looks, however, that (even though this was probably the best episode all season) they may have just used a little subterfuge on us. There were rumors floating around a couple weeks back that the creepy kid who killed his mom at the circus will one day be the maniac himself… and the showrunners did promise that a Joker storyline would be put into motion by the end of Season 1. But who knows for sure?
Let’s not forget that the episode also had Fish spooning her own eye out and stomping on it! Ewwww… she really didn’t want Dulmacher getting his hands on it (catch the name there?). Not to mention, some whacked out Army buddy stabbed Alfred, and is apparently working with the execs at Wayne Enterprises to take out Bruce! Wonder where this is headed?
Arrow gave us the mother of all double-takes this last week before their 2 week hiatus. After teaming up (begrudgingly) with Merlyn, Thea dropped a huge bomb and decided to not only tell Laurel and Nyssa that she killed Sarah – she sicked the wrath of Al’Ghul on him. After he is abducted, and Nyssa is ensnared by one of Ollie’s rope arrows then caged at Verdant – Ollie and Digg decide to take a trip to one of JB’s favorite mythical cities: Nanda Parbat. It is here where that “WTF!!” moment occurs… the Demon’s Head offers Ollie his succession. Stephen Amell promised us one of those moments… the show delivered! Did I forget to mention that Raylicity set off some serious naughty sparks, and the Atom took to the sky in this episode?
Speaking of the Flash and Arrow… CW is apparently in the works of an Arrow/Flash crossover spin-off show! It will basically be the ATOM project they previously had in the pipeline, but include other characters as well. Characters like Firestorm’s more crotchety half Martin Stein and Leonard Snart… but the project is also set to introduce no less than 3 major DC characters to the mix. I’m excited for that prospect.
In other TV news, get ready to see zombie brains and guts for an additional 30 minutes soon. That’s right, it has been confirmed that The Walking Dead Season 5 finale will be a whopping 90 minutes long! With how gruesome and gritty this season has been so far, I can’t wait to see what kind of mayhem Rick and the group conjure up; especially since we’re just about to be introduced to a whole new town… more to come on that.
Disney has announced that later this year, work begins on an all-new, re-imagined reboot of Duck Tales, set to air on Disney XD in 2017. Let that settle for a second… just think of what they could reboot if that works out; Let’s not forget that Darkwing Duck was a side-ways spinoff (Darkwing’s sidekick was Launchpad McQuack – Scrooge’s personal pilot).
Netflix is also joining the reboot game this year, as they are set to release new lines for Inspector Gadget and his crew, as well as an old-time BBC favorite: Danger Mouse. If you’ve never seen any DM cartoons, you haven’t lived yet.
Speaking of Netflix… for the next 2 days I will be completely unreachable. At midnight (PST) yesterday, House of Cards season 3 was released. Need I say more? I can’t wait to see what kind of political wrongness Frank causes this time… I mean he was just sworn in as Pres when we left him at the end of season 2!
Now, let’s get into some movie stuff, shall we?
There have been a lot of things going on at the Avengers camp this week. A brand spanking new 30 second TV spot was released, which I was hoping would have some Vision sneaks in it – but was let down. Either way, it’s still a teaser for Age of Ultron… so I can’t complain too much. Along with that new trailer, whole cacophonies of promo posters have been released for the movie itself, then for each main character. Then RDJ (Iron Man himself) decided to drop a little bit of knowledge on us all with his tweet, “big announcement in 8 days… #getexcited”. Oh, RDJ – you tricksy little minx. Perhaps we’ll finally get to see something on Vision? Or who those mysterious ladies are in the original trailers? Or maybe some more info on Andy Serkis’ character Ulysses Klaw? I guess we’ll just have to wait… those 8 days are up on next Thursday.
In some Suicide Squad news – Will Smith has been interviewed quite a few times recently, and has said how much he’s looking forward to developing the Deadshot character… but he’s also mentioned he doesn’t know a whole lot about the history of Deadshot; the good/bad news swing could go either way on that. Jared Leto has been quoted as saying he is putting on a lot of weight for his new role as the Joker, suggesting we may be seeing a very different, more muscle-bound, prison-worn Joker than we’re used to. Margot Robbie has also been in front of some reporters, all but confirming multiple-movie spots for Harley Quinn (which has Producer Mo squealing with joy).
A fan-made Power Rangers video (Power/ Rangers) was leaked online this week, showing a more adult-driven, grittier take on the never-ending series of Kung Fu fighting teenagers in spandex. The film, produced by Adi Shankar and directed by Joseph Khan and starring James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff, showed a universe where the fame of being Power Rangers affected each of the members from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers line up of the early 90’s (Jason, Billy, Zack, Tommy, Kimberly and Trini). You’ll just have to watch it… for a 14 minute short, there is a whole lot going on. Suffice it to say – I thought it was pretty awesome. Saban Brands, on the other hand, did not. Since its release – the short has been yanked from Vimeo and YouTube, but you can still watch it on Adi Shankar’s FB page here.
To wrap us this week’s recap, we say goodbye to one of the world’s most recognizable faces and names in sci-fi. At the ripe old age of 83, Leonard Nimoy has passed away. I think it’s safe to say that he lived long, and most definitely prospered from his incredibly long-run as Mr. Spock. With that, I leave you with a special quote from the man himself…
“Spock is definitely one of my best friends. When I put on those ears, it's not like just another day. When I become Spock, that day becomes something special." — Leonard Nimoy
As always, sound off with #OutSpokenJays. Do you have any special memories of Star Trek or Spock? Have anything to add to this week’s recap?
