Morpheus (otherwise known to DC/Vertigo readers as Dream)
in the iconic Sandman graphics may finally get his day at the cinema… preferably sooner than later.

Neil Gaiman, creator of Sandman – not to mention me & my wife’s absolute favorite

author- has been doing interviews (none with us… just sayin’), and talking “high hopes” for the David S. Goyer and Joseph Gordon-Levitt project that, as of yet, does not have a solid release date. Although the name has been dropped a dozen or so times before to be adapted to the big screen since the 90’s; having names like these, as well as having Gaiman on board and recently appointing Jack Thorne to write the script… things are looking up for our Endless friend.
In an interview with Radio Times.com, Gaiman points out a few different actors that have been looked at over the years to play Morpheus in a feature film… those include Johnny Depp (though he does state that was years ago, and Depp is too old for the part now), Benedict Cumberbatch (recently confirmed for Marvel Studio’s Dr. Strange, soon to be in production) and even Tom Hiddleston. While all of that is pure speculation and none have actually been approached for the role, how cool would it be to see Cumberbatch or Hiddleston as Dream of the Endless??
Gaiman goes on to say that Morpheus could really be played by anyone with an English accent and magnificent cheek bones. Though I beg to differ and would really have to think who I would want in that role, I can’t help but throw out a few other options for Gaiman, Goyer and Gordon-Levitt to consider…
Option #1: For the Whovians among us… David Tennant

Tall, thin, amazing cheekbone structure, he has the accent AND he has played a dark semi-menacing character before (aka Barty Crouch Jr).
Option #2: Luke Evans

I know what you’re saying – “Jay, you’re only picking because he’s your man-crush”. While that may be, he’s tall, has the right look (as you can see from his recent Dracula: Untold pictures), he’s Welsh and a really decent actor.
Option #3: David Bowie

Ok…this one is just for fun. But if you look at the very first drawings of Morpheus (the black & white drawing at the top) and pictures of Bowie from Labyrinth – you’ll see why I chose it. PLUS David Bowie is awesome!
Time for #OutSpokenJays ! Chime in and let us know who you think would be the better Morpheus (aka Dream of the Endless)…and if you have pictures or fanart- that would be even better!! #NeilGaimanOnSpokenJays #SandmanMovie
