How it all began ... Part II

I realized I was a nerd the day I wanted to own a golden knight armor that represented my zodiac sign. Why? Well, I grew up in Colombia, and my nerdiness was focused on anime shows that I was able to watch through cable.

The first show I remember falling in love with was Knights of the Zodiac. I’m not going to go into it, but yes, it was really long episodes with very little plot and battles that lasted hours and hours and hours, but OH MY GOD I LOVED THESE SHOWS!
My siblings and I (one boy, one girl) would usually stay home alone without being able to watch TV. My mom would go run errands, but before leaving she would lock her room where the TV was and she’d be gone for hours. While we “patiently” waited for her we found ways to sneak into my parent’s room, sometimes it included credit card like things to pick the locks, many other times it was going down a window that was adjacent to their bathroom. My brother would come up with these ideas and either my sister or I would execute the plan because he didn’t fit through the window (shout out to my brother who didn’t get hurt, but his beautiful sisters did… multiple times). Once we were inside we would pay a lot of attention to details, where the remote was, what channel the TV was on, we wouldn’t sit on the bed so it wouldn’t mess it up, and we would just sit in front of the TV and watch all the shows we were not supposed to watch at the time.
Another show that I completely loved and later became my biggest obsession was

Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. Yes, again, hours and hours of pointless battles, but I remember we would come home around 1 pm, have lunch, take my catholic school
uniform off, and sit in front of the TV to watch DBZ. I remember that after the show ended, all the boys that lived in my apartment complex would go outside and stage the scenes. It was really fun to watch them, but I never join them.
Later came Sailor Moon, but contrary to the fact that it was a girl’s show, I wasn’t that into it. Then I was introduced to American cartoons thanks to Cartoon Network.
My mom didn’t like violent shows, and as I said these were anime shows, which meant blood, guts, and body fluids all over the screen. But of course, since these were the shows we were not allowed to watch, these were the ones we would watch the most. I watched several seasons of Knights of the Zodiac and DBZ multiple times, and after watching the shows, I would go to school and discuss the episodes, most of the time with the boys, because the girls were not into that.
My mom noticed I wasn’t very girly and she sort of prohibited “manly” things (i.e. comic books, sports) because she thought I would become a tom boy, her efforts sort of paid off and back fired at the same time. Today I collect shoes, clothes, and make up, along with my Batman figures, Harry Potter, everything that has to do with Disney and I discuss movies with my boys (hi JB and Jay!).
